December 3, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior BJP leaders attended the screening of the film Sabarmati Report Monday at the Bayogi Auditorium of the State House. Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Health Minister JP Nadda and other BJP MPs were also present at the screening organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. A dinner was held after the event on the invitation of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
After the screening, Prime Minister Modi said X Sharing his thoughts, he said, “Attended the screening of Sabarmati Report along with NDA MPs. “I applaud the efforts of the makers of the film. “
The film focuses on the 2002 Godhra train fire tragedy, which claimed the lives of 59 people, most of whom were returning from Ayodhya after attending religious rituals. The incident triggered widespread communal riots in the state of Gujarat, where Modi was chief minister at the time. The film claims to present the “truth” behind the tragic events.
Several opposition lawmakers criticized the screening, accusing the government of using it as a propaganda platform. “It is problematic for the Prime Minister to attend the screening of a propaganda film after the prorogation of Parliament, especially on a topic where many accusations have been leveled against him,” said TMC’s House of Representatives MP Saket Gokhale. He further questioned, “Is Parliament a place accountable to the people or is it a cinema?”
Congress MP Manish Tewari also weighed in, expressing surprise at the incident and saying that no film was ever screened in Parliament during his tenure as Information and Broadcasting Minister. He added, “MIB used to hold screenings at Mahadev Auditorium but never in Parliament.”
This is not the first time a film has been screened in Parliament. August 2022, Rocketry: The Nanoratio Effect I&B Minister Anurag Thakur was also present at the screening.
