Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. This is Omar Abdullah’s first visit to Delhi since taking office last week. Ahead of PM Modi, Omar Abdullah also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh.
Umar is understood to have sought the Centre’s cooperation to ensure smooth functioning of Union Territory administration and informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the newly elected Parliament passing a resolution to grant full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Demand restoration of full statehood
Omar had also submitted a resolution passed by the cabinet last week urging the Center to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir “in its original form”, officials said.

In the recent federal territory parliamentary elections, the National Conference, a political party led by Abdullah, won 42 of the 90 parliamentary seats to form the government. The party formed an electoral alliance with the Congress.
The proposal has been approved by the cabinet
The new government passed a resolution at its first cabinet meeting urging the central government to restore the status of Jammu and Kashmir. The proposal was subsequently approved by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The Chief Minister has the power to negotiate with the Prime Minister and the Central Government to advocate the restoration of the status of Jammu and Kashmir, subject to the approval of the Cabinet.
