There are assembly elections in Haryana and the Phogat family is once again in the news. After Babita Phogat, now her cousin and Olympian Vinesh Phogat and brother-in-law Bajrang Punia have entered politics. Babita is the outgoing BJP MLA from Charkhi Dadri. However, this time her ticket has been cut. At the same time, Vinesh and Bajrang joined Congress in Delhi on 6 September. Congress has declared Vinesh as a candidate from Julana seat of Jind district. While Bajrang has been accommodated in the organization and given the responsibility of Kisan Morcha. Let us know about the politics inside the Phogat family…

All the 6 daughters of the Phogat family, which includes Vinesh, Babita, Geeta, Sangeeta, Priyanka and Ritu, have brought glory to the country. The story of Vinesh’s guru Mahavir Phogat has been shown in the film ‘Dangal’. Mahavir has also been awarded the Dronacharya Award by the Government of India for his coaching. Mahavir Singh Phogat has four daughters – Geeta, Babita, Ritu and Sangeeta. Mahavir has also raised Priyanka and Vinesh. Vinesh lost her father Rajpal at the age of 9. Mahavir Phogat is Vinesh’s uncle. Vinesh married Somveer Rathi in 2018. Somveer has also been a national level wrestler.

How was the career of the Phogat sisters?

Mahavir Phogat is a resident of Balali village in Bhiwani district. He taught wrestling to all his six daughters in his village itself. Three sisters Geeta, Babita and Vinesh participated in various weight categories in the Commonwealth Games and won gold medals. While Priyanka won a silver medal in the Asian Championship. Ritu has won a gold medal in the National Championship. Sangeeta has won medals in age level international championships. Sangeeta is married to wrestler Bajrang Punia. That is, Bajrang Punia is the brother-in-law of the Phogat sisters.

Family upset with Vinesh’s entry into Congress!

Currently, there is turmoil in the Phogat family due to Vinesh and Bajrang joining the Congress. First Mahavir Phogat gave a statement and expressed his displeasure over Vinesh joining politics. After that, BJP MLA Babita Phogat’s statement came on Tuesday. It is clear from the statements of both that everything is not well in the Phogat family and politics has entangled the entire family. Babita even said that Bhupendra Hooda (Congress leader) has created a rift in our family.

‘Hooda caused a rift in the family’

Babita said that Vinesh took the decision to join Congress in haste. Bhupendra Hooda was successful in creating a rift in the Phogat family. People will teach him a lesson. Congress’s agenda has been ‘divide and rule’. They have always worked to break families. Vinesh should have listened to her uncle Mahavir Phogat. Mahavir is Vinesh’s guru. She should have listened to her guru. Guru shows the right path. Vinesh should have focused on her wrestling career. She could have won a gold medal in the 2028 Olympics.

BJP cancelled Babita’s ticket

Babita joined BJP in 2019. She won the election from Charkhi Dadri seat. However, this time the party has cut Babita’s ticket and fielded Sunil Sangwan, who took VRS from the job of jailor. Sunil’s father has been a minister in the Haryana government. However, Babita supported the decision of BJP and said, the party is bigger than the individual and the country is bigger than the party. I am with the decision of the top leadership of BJP. Being a dedicated party worker, I will continue to discharge every responsibility given by the organization.

Let us tell you that last year Vinesh Phogat had made serious allegations against the then President of Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and staged a sit-in protest. Bajrang Punia came out on the streets to support Vinesh. The protesters said that Brij Bhushan had harassed and persecuted many junior wrestlers. Brij Bhushan is a BJP leader and has been an MP six times.

Know what Mahavir Phogat said about Vinesh…

Vinesh’s uncle Mahavir Phogat said that he wants Vinesh to focus on winning the gold medal in the 2028 Olympics. He objected to Vinesh’s decision to join politics and contest elections. In a conversation with Aaj Tak, Mahavir said, I wanted Vinesh to participate in another Olympics and win a gold medal. She should have focused on achieving her Olympic target. I am against her joining politics. Mahavir said that when a player decides to join politics, all hopes are lost.

Earlier, Mahavir Phogat had urged his niece Vinesh to reconsider her decision to retire from wrestling. Mahavir had said that she is heartbroken after being disqualified from the Paris Olympics, but will recover from this incident.

Which way is the Jat community leaning in Haryana?

The Phogat family belongs to the Jat community. Jats constitute 22-27 percent of Haryana’s population. BJP has never received major support from this community in state elections. However, after the Balakot attack in 2019, when a nationalist atmosphere was created across the country, the Jat community also supported the BJP. But mostly the Jat votes have been divided between the Congress and the Chautala family’s Indian National Lok Dal and Jannayak Janata Party. BJP has benefited from the division of votes.

In the 2014 assembly elections, 42 percent of Jats supported INLD. While 24 percent supported Congress and 17 percent supported BJP. In 2019, 36 percent supported Congress. 31 percent voted for JJP and 18 percent voted for BJP. Jats have more than 20 percent population in 37 seats of Haryana. Of these, 22 are in Jatland, while eight are in Bagdi. 30 seats are in Rohtak and Hisar area. Of these, four seats are in GT Road belt and three in Braj. Since these seats come in 40 percent share of the assembly, Congress is hoping to get benefit on these seats with the arrival of Vinesh.

Voting for 90 seats in Haryana Assembly elections is to be held on October 5 and the results will be declared on October 8.
