People are buying smartphones of this price, not cheap, 42 percent growth – report

Smartphone shipments in India have increased by 7.2 percent in the first half of the year 2024. During this period, 6.9 crore devices have been shipped. This information has been given by market research firm IDC. In the second quarter of the year, 3.5 crore smartphones were shipped, which is 3.2 percent more than this quarter of last year.

In the second quarter, many companies have launched many new smartphones, the benefit of which is clearly visible in the shipments. It is expected that sales will increase in the second half of the year also. Due to the festive season, higher sales are expected this half year. However, the number of premium phones will increase in this half.

Sales of entry level segment decreased

According to the ICD report, sales of entry level smartphones have decreased. Shipments have decreased by 36 percent in this quarter as compared to last year. This decline has been seen in phones with budget up to Rs 8,400 i.e. entry level segment. At present, entry level phones account for 14 percent of the total market share.

Xiaomi and Poco phones dominate this budget. If we talk about the mass market segment, there is a growth of 8 percent. The market of phones ranging from Rs 8,400 to Rs 16,800 has increased by 8 percent. Xiaomi is on top in this segment also.

There has been a growth of 42 percent in the entry level premium segment or mid range segment. The shipment of phones with price points ranging from Rs 16,800 to Rs 33,500 has increased significantly. Oppo, Vivo and Samsung dominate this segment. However, the growth of premium mid range market (Rs 33,500 to Rs 50,400) has decreased by 25 percent. Vivo and OnePlus are the top players in this segment.

At the same time, the shipment of premium (Rs 50,400 to Rs 67,100) handsets has also decreased by 37 percent. The super premium smartphone segment has grown by 22 percent in the second quarter. This time the shipment has increased by 22 percent as compared to last year and the share of this category in the total market has reached 7 percent.
