India’s journey in Paris Paralympics 2024 has ended. On 8 September (Sunday), Pooja Ojha could not qualify for the Women’s KL1 200m final in Canoe Sprint. This was India’s last event in the current games. If seen, India performed very well in Paris Paralympics. This time India won a record 29 medals. This included 7 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze medals. This time India won the most medals in athletics, 17, including four gold medals. After this, the second number was in para badminton, in which India won 5 medals including one gold. India got 4 medals including one gold in parashooting. On the other hand, India won 2 medals including one gold in para archery and 1 bronze medal in para judo. For the first time India has won so many gold medals in the Paralympic Games. Earlier, Indian players had won 5 gold medals in Tokyo Paralympics.

If we look at the period from 1968 to 2016, India had won only 12 medals in the Paralympic Games. But India has now won four times more medals than that in the last two Paralympic Games combined. India has won 19 medals in Tokyo and 29 medals in Paris, which adds up to a total of 48. This long flight of India in the Paralympic Games holds a lot of significance.

Para athlete Murlikant Petkar won the first medal for India in the Paralympic Games in the year 1972. Murlikant Petkar is the same player on whose life the film ‘Chandu Champion’ was also released recently. Shooter Avani Lekhara won the first medal for India in the Paris Paralympics 2024, which was a gold medal.
