The drama in Pakistan cricket never ends. The latest example concerns the Pakistan red-ball cricket team. In fact, in April this year, the Pakistan Cricket Board appointed former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie as the head coach of the Pakistan Test team for a period of two years. Gillespie has also taken on an interim role as limited-overs coach following the departure of South Africa’s Gary Kirsten in October 2024. It comes just seven months after Gillespie, who was linked with the Pakistan team, resigned. In this situation, the Pakistan Cricket Board had to take a big step urgently.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Aaqib Javed as Pakistan’s interim red-ball head coach following the resignation of Jason Gillespie. Aqib’s first assignment as red-ball head coach will be the two-match Test series against South Africa in the ongoing full-format tour.
Gillespie furious with PCB decision
According to ESPNcricinfo, Jason Gillespie is angry with the PCB for not renewing the contract of Pakistan Red Team high performance coach Tim Nilsson. Gillespie was not given any information about the decision. So he resigned. The coach’s resignation ahead of the Champions Trophy could cost Pakistan dearly. Pakistan’s second coach has resigned in seven months.
The first Test between South Africa and Pakistan will be held from December 26 to 30 at SuperSport Park in Centurion. The second Test will be held from January 3 to 7 at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town. The Pakistan men’s team is currently touring South Africa for a three-match T20 series, which will be followed by a three-match ODI series.
