Pakistan’s parliament passed controversial constitutional amendments in the House of Representatives. Thereafter, the term of the Chief Justice is 3 years. To pass the bill, the House of Representatives meets from Sunday to midnight Monday. Thereafter, the bill was approved at 5 am on Monday morning. In fact, Pakistan has already undergone the 26th Constitutional Amendment. To pass the bill, 336 members of the House of Representatives voted in favor of 225. The House of Representatives only needs 224 votes to pass the bill.
Pakistan’s upper house passed the bill 65 to 4. The bill needs 64 votes to pass the Senate. Thereafter, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari agreed to the bill and it became law after signing it.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Talal introduced the bill in the House of Representatives
PTI news agency quoted sources as saying that the bill was submitted to the House of Representatives for consideration by Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar. Introducing the bill in the Senate, he said the new committee would include the chief justice, the four most senior judges of the Supreme Court, two senators and two members of the National Assembly. Each of these will have a member from the opposition party.
Independent candidates support the bill
Regarding the bill, opposition leaders claimed that the entire move was aimed at preventing Justice Mansoor Ali Shah from becoming the Chief Justice upon the retirement of current CJP Faiz Isa. Let us tell you that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Sunni Council (SIC) opposed this amendment in the National Assembly. While six independent parliamentarians backed by PTI supported the bill.
