Pakistan: Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi granted bail in Toshakana case, arrested 9 months ago

Pakistan’s Islamabad High Court has granted bail to Bushra Bibi, wife of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Toshakana corruption case involving the illegal sale of government gifts. He was released on bail about nine months after his arrest.

According to Geo News, during a hearing before Islamabad High Court Judge Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb, the bail plea of 50-year-old former first lady Bushra Bibi has been accepted and the court has ordered her to pay a bond of Rs 1 million.

The court’s decision came as a relief to Bushra Bibi. The couple was arrested on January 31 after a court found her guilty in a corruption case and sentenced the couple to 14 years in prison.

During the hearing, Justice Aurangzeb asked the FIA investigating officer whether Bushra Bibi needed to be questioned further. The officer confirmed no additional investigation was needed and a judge later granted bail.

Sources told Geo News that Bushra Bibi is not wanted or arrested in any other case and she can be released after posting bail and issuing an expiration order.

What is the Toshacana case?

Toshakhana is a government department of Pakistan. Tosakana preserves gifts from heads of government and foreign dignitaries to the president, prime minister, members of parliament, bureaucrats and officials. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Imran Khan was accused of buying gifts kept by Toshakana at low prices and then selling them at a profit. Imran Khan received many precious gifts during his visit to Europe, especially Arab countries, as Prime Minister of the country in 2018. Imran did not declare many of the gifts, and many of the gifts were purchased at prices well below their original prices and then sold outside at higher prices.
