The Pakistan Army has for the first time publicly acknowledged its role in the 1999 Kargil war against India. Speaking at an event in Rawalpindi to mark Pakistan’s Defence Day, Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir said that many of our soldiers lost their lives while fighting the Kargil wars in 1965, 1971 and 1999.

At the event, the army chief said, ‘Whether it is 1948, 1965, 1971 or the Kargil war of 1999, thousands of soldiers have sacrificed their lives for Pakistan and Islam.’ The Pakistani army has never publicly accepted its direct role in the Kargil war. It has always officially claimed that it was the work of ‘Mujahideen’.

Pakistan suffered a crushing defeat in Kargil

Pakistan suffered a crushing defeat in the 1999 war. Indian troops successfully recaptured the positions occupied by the intruders on the Indian side of the LoC in the Kargil sector, including Tiger Hill, after a nearly three-month-long battle in Ladakh.

545 soldiers were martyred

The then US President Bill Clinton had also asked Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to withdraw his army personnel from the Kargil sector. ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ is celebrated to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the war. A total of 545 soldiers lost their lives while fighting Pakistani intruders.

Pakistan refused to take the body

India has always said that the operation was a strategy by Pakistan to assert its claim on Kashmir. India has a lot of evidence to prove the role of the Pakistani army in Kargil, including prisoners of war, their uniforms and weapons.

After the war, the Indian Army buried many dead Pakistani soldiers in Kargil. The Pakistani Army refused to accept the bodies of the soldiers killed in Kargil. The officers had secretly asked for the bodies of Pakistani officers killed in the war.
