An anti-corruption court in Pakistan on Tuesday acquitted Bushra Bibi, wife of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in 12 cases related to the riots that took place on May 9 last year. Violence broke out in the country after authorities arrested Imran Khan in Islamabad for investigation in a corruption case.

Anti-Corruption Court judge Malik Ejaz Asif presided over the hearing held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Here the police had requested Bushra Bibi’s remand for further investigation.

What did Bushra Bibi’s lawyer say?

During the hearing, the court examined the police’s request for physical remand to probe BB’s alleged involvement in 12 cases, including the attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ).

However, the court rejected the police plea and acquitted Bibi in all the cases. Her lawyer Salman Safdar told the media outside Adiala Jail that she was named in the cases on the basis of several statements that had no legal basis.

He said, “The court considered the arguments of both the sides before giving its verdict. The decision to acquit Bushra Bibi today is expected to impact the cases of Imran Khan, who was named in those cases along with hundreds of other workers of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.

More than 200 cases are registered against Imran and he has been convicted in some of them. Although cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has got bail or his sentence has been revoked, he has not been released.
