The hacked account reportedly saw the “fake” posts at around 7pm New York time and continued for at least an hour before being deleted.

On Monday morning, ahead of the news account incident, an OpenAI security staff released an internal memo to employees, warning them of a recent increase in account takeovers involving OpenAI employees and sharing guidance on how to secure their accounts. A person familiar with the matter spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private information.

This is not the first time fraudulent cryptocurrency-related posts have surfaced from OpenAI-linked accounts. On Sunday, researcher Jason Wei’s account posted a similar message, claiming to announce the launch of a token called $OPENAI. In June, the account of OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki was hijacked. Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati’s account was also briefly taken over in June 2023.
