In an important decision, the Odisha government has removed State Commission for Women (SCW) chairperson Minati Behera. Data shows that Minati Behera’s performance was not ideal during his tenure. Although the state government had issued directives long ago to remove Behera from office, he did not leave the chairmanship. Following this, the government issued a show-cause notice to him and asked him to respond by November 1. The government has since called their response “inadequate” and said it did not justify the commission’s poor performance. “After a thorough and careful review of the justification response submitted by the OSCW Chairman, it was found that the response was insufficient and did not justify the committee’s poor performance,” the government said in a formal notification.
The government will soon appoint a new president
The issue has sparked new controversy, with some even questioning whether the government’s move is reasonable. In the coming weeks, the Odisha government is expected to appoint another chairperson to lead the state women commission and ensure effective and timely resolution of women-related issues across the state.
Appointed to BJD government
In 2019, Behera was appointed Odisha SCW president by the erstwhile Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government led by Naveen Patnaik. Before being appointed as Odisha SCW president, Behera was the chief of the women’s wing of the BJD. She also served as the Chairman of Odisha State Commission for Persons with Disabilities from 2015 to 2018.
