Odisha case: CM Majhi orders judicial probe, asks HC to also monitor probe

The government has taken action against an officer of the Bharatpur police station in Odisha and his fiancée for misconduct and harassment. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday ordered a judicial inquiry. The CM said the state government would not hesitate to take strict action against any person or official found guilty. The government has also asked the High Court to oversee the crime branch investigation.

Earlier, CM Majhi held discussions with Deputy Chief Ministers KV Singh Deo and Parvati Parida, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan and senior officials after which he issued the order for judicial inquiry.

According to a statement from the chief minister’s office, the judicial inquiry will be headed by Justice Chittaranjan Das and the report will be submitted within 60 days. The state government has also asked the Odisha High Court to monitor the ongoing investigation by the crime branch of the police.

Chief Minister Majhi stressed on law and order and said the state government respects the Indian Army, the news agency reported. Our government is fully aware of the dignity, safety and rights of women.

Meanwhile, state governments have also taken significant action. Five policemen of the Bharatpur police station have been suspended and an FIR has been registered against them for torturing an officer and harassing his fiancée.

The state government said that the defendant who engaged in inappropriate behavior with an army officer and his fiancée on the road on the evening of September 15 has been arrested and will appear in court.

Earlier, on the instructions of the Chief Minister, the complainant held a meeting with the two Deputy Chief Ministers, the Revenue Minister and the Law Minister at the State Guest House. During this time, the woman’s father and other senior military officers were also present.

BJD today calls for unity in Bhubaneswar

Meanwhile, the opposition BJD has called for holding the Bhubaneswar festival on September 24. BJD president and leader of opposition Naveen Patnaik also demanded a court-supervised SIT probe and judicial inquiry into the incident.
