Today is October 29th. On this day in 1956, Israel attacked Egypt. The Suez Crisis began with this attack. The Israeli army begins its march towards Egypt’s Suez Canal. It was only after this that the Suez Crisis began.
Israeli forces moved toward the Suez Canal to join forces with French and British forces. Since then, Egypt has been attacked by a coalition of Israeli, British, and French forces. The reason for the attack was the nationalization of the Suez Canal in July 1956 by Egyptian leader General Gamal Abdel Nasser.
Tensions have grown since last year
This has been happening for some time. Two years ago, the Egyptian military began pressuring Britain to end its military presence in the Canal Zone (allowed by the 1936 Anglo-Egyptian Treaty). Nasser’s armed forces also engaged in sporadic fighting with Israeli troops on the border between the two countries.
Egypt received weapons and money from the Soviet Union
Nasser received Soviet weapons and money. The United States has pledged to fund the construction of the Aswan Dam on the Nile River. This led to the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Nasir was also angry. He then ordered the Suez Canal to be confiscated and nationalized.
Britain and France were also outraged by the occupation of the Suez Canal
Britain was outraged by this move by the Egyptian president and sought support from France (who believed Nasser was supporting rebels in the French colony of Algeria) and Israel for an armed attack to retake the canal.
Israel attacks first
After this, the Israelis attacked first, but were surprised to find that the British and French troops did not immediately pursue them. Instead of lashing out, the attack ceased. The United Nations passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.

With the initiative of the United States, things were calmed down
The Soviet Union began threatening to provide aid to Egypt. Dangerous situations soon emerged. However, the United States sternly warned the Soviet Union not to let this happen again. At the same time, the United States also pressured the governments of Britain, France and Israel to withdraw their troops.
