October 16: The British split Bengal into two, and the secession movement broke out again.

Today is October 16th. On October 16, 1905, Bengal was divided into two parts. This partition was accomplished by the British Governor, Lord Curzon. He divided Bengal into two parts with the aim of creating a Muslim majority province. Curzon’s decision was opposed by many people at the time. This became known as the British policy of divide and rule.

Bengal was divided at that time. At that time, the present states of Bangladesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa were all part of the Bengal Province. However, the decision to partition Bengal was taken personally by Curzon, the then Governor-General of India, on July 20, 1905. However, the partition of Bengal came into effect from October 16, 1905.

Historically it was also known as Bangabhang. This was part of Britain’s “divide and rule” policy. To protest against this, the “Bang-Bhang” movement was launched across the country in 1905 AD. Due to the high political instability caused by this partition, the eastern and western regions of Bengal were reunited in 1911 under pressure from the Indian public on both sides.

The first partition of Bengal (1905) was done by British Indian officials. This division separates the predominantly Muslim eastern region from the predominantly Hindu western region. However, just six years later, they were reunited. In 1911, King George V reunited Bengal.
