The Statue of Liberty is a gift of friendship from the French people to the American people. On October 28, 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicated the statue to the people in New York Harbor. Originally called “Liberty Enlightening the World,” the statue was designed by French abolitionist Edouard de Labouille to support the Franco-American alliance and was proposed to commemorate the American Revolution.

French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi designed it. This 151-foot tall statue is of a woman. He held a torch in his hand. Its structure, made up of massive steel supports, was designed by Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc and Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, best known for their work on the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
