Russian President Vladimir Putin rarely meets leaders of other countries other than his counterparts. But when India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval visited him on Thursday, he received a very warm welcome. NSA Doval met the Russian President at Konstantinovsky Palace in St Petersburg and briefed him on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine.
After the meeting between President Putin and NSA Doval, journalists asked Russian Presidential Palace Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov whether Ajit Doval gave any message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Putin.
PM Modi visited Ukraine on 23 August last month and met President Zelensky. In response to a question from reporters in this regard, Peskov said, ‘No such message has come.’
Russian President Putin’s spokesperson Peskov also said that Doval apprised Russian President Putin of his country’s point of view regarding the resolution of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Peskov said, ‘He briefed on the main points of PM Modi’s meetings in Kiev and also gave information about Modi’s vision for resolving the Ukraine conflict.’
However, he said there was no talk of any clear peace plan to end the conflict.
What did NSA Doval say in his meeting with Modi?
During the meeting with President Putin, NSA Doval said, ‘As the Prime Minister told you during his phone conversation, he wanted to tell you about his visit to Ukraine and his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky.’
Doval further said, ‘He wanted me to meet you specifically and personally and tell you about the conversation between the two leaders. The conversation took place in a very close format where only the two leaders were present. He (Zelensky) had two of his people with him and I was with Prime Minister Modi. So I am a witness to the conversation that took place there.’
The NSA’s meeting with the Russian President came almost three weeks after PM Modi’s visit to Ukraine. Before going to Ukraine, PM Modi visited Russia in early July where he met Putin.
What did Putin say in his meeting with Doval?
During the meeting with Doval, the Russian President said, ‘I remember it very well. As I said in our first meeting, not only was PM Modi’s visit to Russia very successful, but the work on the decisions we took during this time is also progressing at a good pace. Our special strategic partnership is progressing in a wonderful and strong manner, which we are happy about.’
