First time meeting in five years
When Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met with BRICS leaders in October last year, the leaders of both countries instructed their respective special representatives to meet as soon as possible to advance negotiations on border disputes. Doval also visited China for the same reason. This will be the first meeting between Ajit Doval and Wang Yi in five years, especially over the border dispute. Although Doval and Wang Yi have spoken on the phone many times since 2019, this will be their first meeting as special representatives.
Talks in Beijing on December 18
The dialogue was seen as a sign of improving relations between India and China, following an agreement on border patrols. NSA Ajit Doval will lead the Indian delegation to the talks in Beijing on December 18. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the focus of the talks is to maintain peace in the border areas and find fair, logical and mutually agreeable solutions to border issues.
