Manipur CM N Biren Singh,
The situation in Manipur is very tense at the moment. Although the state has been affected by violence for more than a year. But the latest situation has once again heightened tensions in the Biren government. The National People’s Party (NPP) has withdrawn its support for the Billon government. In this case, would Chief Minister N Biren Singh lose his chairmanship as NPP withdraws its support? What is the numbers game in Parliament?
NPP withdraws support
In view of the latest situation in Manipur, the state BJP has withdrawn its support to the BJP-led Manipur government. The NPP said the Biren government has completely failed to normalize the situation in violence-hit Manipur. In a letter to BJP national president JP Nadda, the NPP claimed that the situation in Manipur has worsened in the past few days. Many innocent people lost their lives.
What is the numbers game in Parliament?
The NPP has seven MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. However, the withdrawal of support by the NPP will not have any impact on the Biren government as the total number of NDA MLAs is 53. Among them, the number of MLAs of the BJP is 37, while the Naga People’s Front (NPF) has the support of 5 MLAs, including one from JDU, and 3 independent MLAs. On the other hand, among the opposition parties, the Congress Party has 5 MLAs and the People’s Army has 2 MLAs. Earlier, the Kuki People’s Party (KPA) had withdrawn its support to the NDA government in the state in view of caste violence.
Why did violence erupt in Manipur?
Violence has erupted again in the violence-plagued state of Manipur. The latest violent protest occurred on Saturday night. Militants killed three women and three children in Jiribam district. On November 16, people angry over the incident attacked the homes of three Manipur ministers and six MLAs. Their houses were set on fire. Vehicles of ministers and MLAs were set on fire. Since then, the situation in the state has become tense. Internet services were stopped in seven regions. Curfew imposed indefinitely.
