The University Grants Commission (UGC) plans to make degree courses more flexible from the next academic session (2025-26). Through this, the committee aims to help students complete courses and earn their degree at their own pace. UGC Chairman M Jagadish Kumar said that students can complete their degree courses in a shorter period of time.
UGC Chairman M Jagadish Kumar announced that students will have the option of completing a three-year degree course in two and a half years or a four-year degree course in three years. Also, students who want to complete their studies slowly. Now they can also complete a three-year course in four years. Additionally, if a student needs a break, he or she can leave the course midway and resume later.
Students can complete their degree program in less time
The UGC has approved the recommendations of the committee headed by V Kamakoti, dean of IIT Madras. Jagdish Kumar said its detailed guidelines will be released soon. The UGC Chairman said that after obtaining a four-year degree, students will get an opportunity to conduct research work, apply for patents and publish research papers. This will be implemented across the country under the National Education Policy 2020.
UGC Chairman M Jagadish Kumar made the statement on the sidelines of a students’ conference in Chennai on Thursday, The Times of India reported. “Students who are capable can complete their degree program in a shorter time in the next few years,” he said. “We hope he will get 6 months to a year.” The recommendations of the committee headed by Kamakoti were approved on November 13.

UGC Chairman M Jagadish Kumar also said that despite opting for a slow-paced degree, students can take a break from the course if they wish. Since the course has multiple entry and exit points, you can also come back to complete it later. A committee headed by V Kamakoti, dean of IIT Madras, has submitted its recommendations to the UGC on fast-paced and slow-paced degrees.
