Notorious Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda is pursuing Master of Arts (MA) in Berhampur Circle Jail in Ganjam district of Odisha. After graduation, he is pursuing a master’s degree, an official said on Tuesday. Sabyasachi, who is serving a life sentence in jail, is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public administration at Odisha State Open University (OSOU). Having troubled the police and the government for more than two decades, Sabyasachi now became very interested in studying and spent much of his time in prison studying.
Panda, who completed her bachelor’s degree from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) two years ago, is one of the six prisoners who has submitted application documents for admission to OSOU’s two-year master’s degree (public administration). Along with Sabyasachi, a total of four prisoners and two under trial prisoners (UTP) will be examined. The prison administration is providing learning materials to everyone. At the same time, the teachers in the prison also supported his studies.

Berhampur Circle Jail Superintendent DN Barik said, “We have collected documents of six prisoners, including Panda, who are interested in enrolling in the two-year MA (Public Administration) course through correspondence courses. Their studies will be facilitated in all aspects help.

Sanatan Khillar, a teacher in the prison, said, “After they are imprisoned, we will provide them with study materials, and the prisoners can only take the exam through self-study.”

Sabyasachi, also known as Sharat, also known as Sunil, is a key Maoist leader in Odisha and is wanted by the police. He offered a reward of 5 lakh rupees. Panda was arrested from Berhampur on July 18, 2014 and has been behind bars since then. He is an accused in more than 130 Maoist-related cases in different parts of the state. A local court sentenced him to life in prison for spreading violence in the country.
