Nominations for the election for the only vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh will begin on Wednesday. The last date for filing nominations is 21st August and scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on 22nd August. The last date for withdrawal of names is 26th August.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Madhya Pradesh Anupam Rajan said that voting will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on September 3 and the results will be declared on the same day. This Rajya Sabha seat had become vacant after BJP leader and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia won the Lok Sabha elections from Guna constituency.

Members of the Rajya Sabha are elected by the MLAs of the Assembly, who vote on the basis of proportional representation under the single transferable vote system.

If voting is held on the basis of BJP’s strength in Madhya Pradesh Assembly, then the party candidate will win easily. The saffron party has not yet announced its Rajya Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh. In the 230-member assembly of the state, BJP has 163 MLAs, Congress has 64 and Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) has one MLA. Two seats are lying vacant.
