The first flight of ISRO’s biggest space mission Gaganyaan will probably not be without living beings. Flies will also be sent in this capsule. This mission will be unmanned but 20 containers full of flies (Fruit Flies) will be sent in it. The same flies which we usually see sitting on fruits and vegetables.

The purpose is to study kidney stones that astronauts who travel in space. Actually, 77 percent of the genes in flies are such that cause diseases in humans. The excretory system of flies is very similar to that of humans. If these flies face the problem of stones while living in space, then it will be easier to study kidney stones that astronauts suffer from.

In this study, scientists from Indian Institute of Space and Technology and University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad are working together with ISRO. Now ISRO will send 20 containers filled with flies in the first capsule launch of Gaganyaan. This launch is possible at the end of this year.

Why is kidney stone study important?

Usually astronauts who go to space have the problem of kidney stones. Because in space they eat food with less water. So that they do not have to urinate frequently. This increases the acidity in urine. Bones start weakening. The amount of calcium in the blood starts increasing. This increases the risk of kidney stones. It is estimated that about 1.75 crore rupees will be spent in this study.
