Nisha Dahiya in Paris Olympics 2024: A different passion of Indian wrestler Nisha Dahiya was seen on Monday (5 August) in Paris Olympics 2024. In the quarter-finals of Women’s Freestyle 68 kg, Nisha was facing North Korean wrestler Pak Sol Gum. At one time in this match, Nisha was moving towards victory with a lead of 8-2, when she suffered a dangerous injury in her shoulder.

It was difficult for Nisha to even raise her hand, but only 1 minute was left in the match and Nisha had to somehow finish the match, because the lead was already established. In such a situation, Nisha started crying and with tears she stood up again like a lioness and looked ready to fight. But his shoulder was badly injured, so the Korean wrestler took advantage of the opportunity and made a strong move and took a lead of 10-8. In this way Nisha lost this match. After the defeat, Nisha started crying, the video of which has also gone viral. People are praising his courage.

Nisha will no longer get a chance to win a medal

Nisha Dahiya is out of the wrestling competition because the North Korean wrestler to whom she lost in the quarter-finals has lost in the semi-finals. Therefore there is no repechage round for Nisha. Actually, if North Korean wrestler Pak Sol Gum had reached the final, Nisha Dahiya would have got a chance to play for the bronze medal under the repechage rule, but now unfortunately this will not happen.

Earlier it was expected that Nisha Dahiya might get one more chance through ‘repeach’ to win the bronze medal. But for this, it was necessary for North Korean wrestler Pak Sol Gum, who defeated Nisha, to reach the finals but it could not happen.

Nisha dominated the Korean player from the beginning

Asian Championship silver medalist wrestler Nisha took a 4-0 lead against the North Korean wrestler in the first few seconds. After this, she did not give any chance to the North Korean wrestler by adopting a defensive attitude in the initial period of three minutes.

Sol Gum started the second period aggressively and scored a point, but Nisha took her lead out of the ring to 6-1. He strengthened his lead with two more points but during this his right hand got seriously injured.

There was still a minute left in the match and Nisha had started moaning in pain. She started playing after treatment, but was not successful in stopping the North Korean wrestler. She got down from the mat with moist eyes.

Earlier, this 25 year old wrestler had made a winning start against Ukraine’s Tetiana Sova in the last 16 match. Nisha defeated the Ukrainian wrestler 6-4. Nisha was lagging behind Tetiana in the beginning, but after the tie at 4-4, she won by taking Tetiana out of the mat in the last few seconds and winning by two points.

What is the repechage system in wrestling?

The word repechage is derived from the French word repechure, which means to defend. Repechage is a system in wrestling competitions, which gives a chance to the wrestlers who lost in the initial round to make a comeback. In wrestling, a participant who has lost in the pre-quarterfinals or later rounds gets another chance to compete further and compete for the bronze medal.

However, this is allowed only if the wrestler to whom they lost has made it to the finals. To put it in simple words, the players who have been defeated by the two wrestlers who have reached the finals in the knockout round, get a chance to win the bronze medal through the repechage round.

Unlike other sports, in wrestling the draw of matches between wrestlers is not according to their ranking. In a sport like tennis, two top ranking players never face each other in the initial round. But on many occasions in wrestling, two top ranked players compete in the initial round. That is why repechage rule is implemented in wrestling, so that there is no injustice to the players. It was used for the first time in the wrestling events of the Olympics in the Beijing Olympics (2008).
