Netflix’s troubles don’t stop there. Recently, many cases of fraud in the name of OTT platforms have come to light, and the company has been fined tens of millions of rupees. The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) has slapped a hefty fine of £4.74 million (approximately Rs. 43 crore) on a leading OTT platform. The company was accused and found guilty of hiding user data and making its privacy statement unclear.
The investigation continues since 2019
According to reports, the Dutch privacy watchdog claimed that the streaming platform did not clearly inform users of any information about data privacy between 2018 and 2020. According to the report, the Dutch Data Protection Authority said that an investigation started in 2019 found that Netflix did not clearly tell users in its privacy statement how the company actually processed their data.
The company is cooperating with the investigation
Dutch authorities said the company failed to clearly inform users about its business and why it collected user data. This breaches the rules of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). However, Netflix stated that this investigation began five years ago and that we are fully cooperating with the Dutch Data Protection Authority. In addition, we proactively provide users with better information about their privacy information. We oppose this decision.
Policy revision
Netflix recently revised its privacy policy and clarified information. The Dutch Data Protection Authority said in its order that a company with billions and millions of users around the world should clearly inform its customers about how their personal data is processed. OTT platforms are currently opposing the order.
