NEET PG Normalization method: NEET PG exam 2024 was held on 11 August 2024 for admission in postgraduate government and private medical colleges. More than 2 lakh students who appeared in the examination are now waiting for their result (NEET PG Result 2024). The examination was conducted in more than one shift (two shifts), hence the result of the examination will be prepared on the basis of normalization formula.

Citing the notice of AIIMS Delhi, NBEMS has said that the percentile score for the examination is a normalized score. Percentile score is the percentage of students who scored ‘equal to or less than’ in that particular percentile on the exam. NEET PG 2024 toppers from both shifts will get 100 percentile as a result of the percentile process. The marks obtained between the highest and lowest score will be converted into percentile. “In this method of scoring, the highest score in each paper (irrespective of raw score/percentage obtained) will be 100 per cent, which means that 100% of the candidates have scored the highest scorer/topper of that shift,” the notice said. Have obtained equal or less marks.”

Why is normalization needed?
Normalization is needed for several reasons, including-

  • Variation in difficulty of examination: If the examination of the same subject is conducted in multiple sessions, the level of difficulty of the question paper may be different in each session. This may give unfair advantage to the candidates appearing in some sessions.
  • Different examination centres: The conditions for conducting the examination at different examination centers may be different from each other. Lighting, seating arrangement or other facilities may be better in some centres, which may provide some benefit to the candidates appearing at those centres.
  • External Influence: Some external factors can also affect the performance of the candidates during the examination, such as noise, interruptions, or power cuts.

What is NEET PG 2024 normalization formula?
NEET PG exam results for each shift will be compiled on the basis of actual numbers and percentage. In this scoring system, the top score in each paper will be given 100 percentile regardless of the actual score or percentage. It shows that all other candidates in that shift have scored equal to or less than this top scorer. The final merit list and ranking of NEET PG will be determined by the percentile score obtained from the actual score. In case of equality in percentage, the older candidate will be given higher rank. Percentage score will be calculated to seven decimal places to reduce clustering effect and equality among candidates.

Formula to find percentile
For example, suppose which student has got the highest 70 percent marks in NEET PG and the total number of students who have got 70 percent or less marks is 15000 while the total number of students in the group was 18000, then the percentile will be calculated like this – 100×15000/18000. =83.33% (This percentage will be the percentile of the student who has secured 70% marks.)
Let us tell you that to reduce tie-breaking, the National Testing Agency calculates the percentile score of a student to 7 decimal places.

Suppose there are two shifts A and B. Shift A paper is a little easier, while Shift B paper is a little difficult. On average candidates in Shift A scored 120 marks out of 150 and on average candidates in Shift B scored 100 marks out of 150 then here normalization will be used to increase the marks of candidates of Shift B so that the marks of both the shifts will be equal to one. Can be brought on the same scale. After normalization, the marks of all the candidates are transformed into a new scale. Now, the marks of candidates from Shift A and Shift B can be compared on the same scale.
