In Bihar’s Nawada district, bullies set fire to houses of the Dalit community. The bullies first opened fire and then sprayed petrol and set all the houses on fire. Villagers said that around 80 houses were burnt. However, the police said that the miscreants set fire to 21 houses. Aaj Tak’s team reached the ground zero and spoke to the victims of the village about their ordeal.

Sunita, a resident of the village that was set on fire in Dalit colony in Krishna Nagar, Nawada, told us that we were cooking bread when the men came. Talking to Aaj Tak, he said, “Our children were using the hand pump. When he came, he said, ‘Hold on, hold on, the girl is leaving.’ The girl dropped her dupatta and ran away. Somehow our children ran away. “They burnt everything, money, Aadhaar cards and said they will burn you too, and then the children hid there, no one was with us.”

First shot, then fire: Victim

Gautam Kumar, a resident of the village, said they started firing as soon as they entered the village. “There were about 100 people at the time. We were sitting nearby. Then there was a stampede and they poured petrol in all the houses and set them on fire. After that, when we saw the children, we took 100 children and hid,” he said. “After that, the government called the SP and said we will send the reserve forces here in an hour and a half.”

Since Wednesday night, villagers have been claiming that the gangsters first fired shots in the air and then poured petrol and set the house on fire. But the Nawada police chief said his team had not found any empty bullet casings, so the reports of firing could not be considered correct. However, bullet casings were also found on Thursday morning. From this, it was clear that they were armed and the allegations of firing seemed to be proven true.

Krishna Nagar, located near Nanaula in Nawada Mufasil police station area, is a Dalit settlement. A Dalit family currently owns part of the land in the village. There is a dispute with the other party over the possession of the land. The authorities are hearing the case. The victim’s family said that the bullies suddenly attacked on Wednesday night. After a fight and exchange of fire, their house was set on fire.

What did Nawada SP say?

SP Abhinav Dhiman said: “Around 7 pm on Wednesday, information was received that some people had burnt houses. Initially, it was said that 40 to 50 houses were burnt, but as far as we know, only 21 houses were burnt apart from that.” So far, no one has been killed in the incident and 10 people, including the main accused, have been arrested.
