Nadeem Sarwar, a prominent political figure in Jammu and Kashmir, has announced his decision to contest the upcoming assembly elections on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket. The elections are scheduled to be held in three phases – September 18, September 25, and October 1, 2024.

Sarwar’s decision comes amidst a flurry of political activity in the region, with several leaders switching parties or rejoining the PDP to secure their mandate in the upcoming polls. The PDP, led by Mehbooba Mufti, has been actively campaigning and fielding candidates across various constituencies.

The Congress party, which has formed an alliance with the National Conference (NC) for the elections, has also released its second list of six candidates, including JKPCC chief Tariq Hameed Karra. The NC and Congress have finalized a seat-sharing formula, with the NC contesting 51 seats and the Congress 32 seats.

Sarwar’s candidature on the PDP ticket is seen as a strategic move to bolster the party’s chances in the elections. The PDP, which has been a key player in Jammu and Kashmir politics, has faced challenges in recent years, including the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the subsequent changes in the political landscape of the region.

The upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir are being closely watched, as they will be the first general election since the abrogation of Article 370 and the first election in the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency following the 2022 delimitation exercise.

As the election campaign heats up, Sarwar’s decision to contest on the PDP ticket is likely to add to the political dynamics in the region. The people of Jammu and Kashmir will be closely following the developments as they prepare to exercise their democratic rights in the upcoming assembly elections.
