Indian-origin Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on Sunday recalled the time she spent with her maternal grandparents in India. In an emotional post, she shared a childhood photo with her maternal grandparents and wished National Grandparents Day.

‘Nana ji used to take me for morning walks in India’

Kamala wrote- ‘When I was a little girl, I used to visit my maternal grandparents in India. Then my grandfather used to take me on a morning walk. During this time he used to discuss the importance of fighting for equality and against corruption. He was a retired civil servant who had been a part of India’s freedom movement.

She further wrote- My grandmother traveled across India with a loudspeaker in her hand to talk to women about birth control. Her commitment to public service and fighting for a better future is still alive in me. Happy National Grandparents Day to all the grandparents who help shape and inspire the next generation. Harris, who is contesting against former President Donald Trump, wrote this post on Sunday, after which it went viral.

Kamala’s mother was a biologist

Actually, Kamala Harris’s mother Shyamala Gopalan was Indian and father Donald J. Harris was Jamaican. Shyamala Gopalan was a resident of Thulasendrapuram village located in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. She was born on 7 December 1938 in Madras. She was a biologist by profession.

Parents divorced when she was 7 years old.

Kamala Harris’s mother Shyamala Gopalan came to the University of California, Berkeley from Tamil Nadu, India in 1960, while her father Donald J. Harris came to the University of California from Jamaica in 1961 after graduating in economics. It was here that the two met and decided to get married while participating in human rights movements. Kamala Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. Kamala was seven years old when her parents separated from each other.
