According to sources, the government is going to bring a bill in Parliament to amend the 1995 law governing Waqf Boards to ensure greater accountability and transparency in their functioning and mandatory participation of women in these bodies. This step has been taken in the background of demands arising from within the Muslim community.

The amendment bill will make it mandatory for Waqf boards to register with district collectors to ensure actual valuation of their properties.

Muslim Personal Law Board spokesperson S Q R Ilyas said the All India Muslim Personal Law Board considers it necessary to clarify that any change in the Waqf Act, 2013 that alters the nature of Waqf properties or the transfer of them to the government or any individual Makes it easier to grab, would not be acceptable. Similarly, reducing or restricting the powers of Waqf Boards will not be tolerated.

Let us tell you that the Central Government is preparing to bring a bill in the Parliament to amend the 1995 law governing the Waqf Board. It is being said that this amendment bill is being considered to be introduced in the Parliament in this session. Earlier in the cabinet meeting on Friday, the proposal for 40 amendments in the Waqf Act has been approved. After the amendment bill is passed in the Parliament, the uncontrolled powers of the Waqf Board will be reduced. The Board will not be able to declare possession of any property without verification.
