Muhammad Yunus meets US delegation, US to provide Rs 17 billion aid to Bangladesh

The United States will provide $202.25 million (about Rs 17 billion) in aid to Bangladesh. It is aimed at promoting development in the South Asian country, empowering youth, strengthening democracy, improving health and expanding business and economic opportunities for the people. Officials provided this information on Sunday.

According to a press release issued by the Bangladesh Ministry of Finance, AKM Shahabuddin, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Relations and Reed J. Eschliman, Mission Director, USAID, signed the sixth amendment to the Development Objective Grant Agreement (DOAG) in Dhaka on behalf of their respective governments.

The United States pledges $954 million

According to media reports, under the agreement, USAID will provide Bangladesh with a grant of US$202.25 million in the three areas of good governance, social, humanitarian and economic opportunities.

On September 27, 2021, Bangladesh and USAID signed a new DOAG for 2021-2026. Through the implementation of the DOAG, USAID pledged a total of $954 million in funding. As of the fifth amendment, USAID had provided $425 million to Bangladesh, the news agency reported.

Yunus meets with US delegation

On Sunday, Bangladesh’s interim government chief adviser, Mohammad Yunus, met with a US delegation to seek US support for Bangladesh’s reconstruction, completion of key reforms and recovery of stolen assets.

He explained the challenges facing the interim government and said his government would move quickly to “reset, reform and restart” the economy, initiate financial sector reforms and step up reforms of institutions such as the judiciary and police.
