The pump action gun that drove away the timber mafia from the forests in Madhya Pradesh will now be used to stop Bangladeshi intruders. The Border Security Force (BSF) will also use this gun to destroy drones flying at low altitudes.
The Madhya Pradesh Forest Department will give 700 pump action guns from its arsenal to the Border Security Force, so that they can be deployed along the international border with Bangladesh.
Madhya Pradesh’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Conservation) PK Singh said that these guns fire rubber bullets and are used to push back armed poachers and tree-cutting gangs in the state. There is no possibility of loss of life due to this.
The forest officer said that we will give 700 pump action guns from our arsenal to the BSF. The Madhya Pradesh government had asked the forest department for these guns after receiving a letter from the Union Home Ministry regarding increasing security on the international border with Bangladesh.
According to another official, these guns were imported from US-based Maverick Arms Inc in 2008. He said that this gun is single barrel and is of 12 GA (gauge) caliber. India shares a 4 thousand 96 kilometer long international border with Bangladesh, which includes a 2,217 kilometer long border with West Bengal. The borders of Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Meghalaya are also adjacent to the neighboring country.
It is known that Bangladesh is in the grip of political turmoil after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on 5 August following strong protests and fled to India. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is currently leading the government there.
After the unrest, many citizens of Bangladesh are trying to enter India. Due to this, the BSF has increased its vigilance on the international border to thwart infiltration attempts.
