China said on Thursday the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, on Wednesday was “very important” as they reached “necessary consensus” on improving bilateral relations. Lin Jian, spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a regular press conference that the two sides have reached important consensus on improving and developing China-India relations and actively promote the relationship between the two countries to return to the track of development.
When answering how China views the outcome of this meeting, Lin said that China is willing to work with India to view and handle relations between the two countries from a strategic and long-term perspective.
Lin said China is also willing to strengthen communication and cooperation, enhance strategic mutual trust, properly handle differences, and push bilateral relations back to the track of stable development as soon as possible.
Modi and Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan on Monday to support the India-China agreement on patrolling and disengagement of the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. Since then, instructions have been issued to restart various bilateral dialogue mechanisms again. In fact, in 2020, military conflicts have already affected relations between the two countries.
“Both sides believed this meeting was constructive and very important,” Lin said. Both sides agreed to view and handle China-India relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, prevent specific differences from affecting the overall relationship, and build better relations. The two sides agreed to strengthen communication and cooperation, enhance strategic mutual trust, and promote the restoration of stable development of bilateral relations as soon as possible through holding meetings between the two foreign ministers and officials at all levels.
The spokesperson said that the leaders of the two countries agreed to make good use of the special representative mechanism for China-India boundary issues, maintain peace and harmony in the border areas, find fair and just solutions, strengthen communication and cooperation on multilateral occasions, and share common interests. There was also unanimous agreement to protect the interests of developing countries.
