Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday held the Railways responsible for the death of a railway employee who got stuck between a locomotive and a buffer while shunting a train in Bihar, saying it was the result of long-term neglect and negligence. The buffer is a device installed at both ends of the train engine and carriage to prevent impact. Buffers are designed to reduce the effects of collisions between bogies.
According to eyewitnesses, the Lucknow-Barauni Express was undergoing shunting at Platform No. 5 at Barauni Junction in Begusarai district of Bihar when the incident took place. Amar Kumar (25) died after he got stuck between the engine and the buffer of the bus. A video of someone trapped between buffer zones has gone viral on social media.

A railway employee died after he got stuck between the engine and the buffer of a carriage during a train shunting exercise at Barauni Junction station in Bihar’s Begusarai district on Saturday. Buffers are designed to reduce the effects of collisions between bogies.
Railroad employee dies due to negligence
An East Central Railway official said a possible violation of guidelines laid down for such systems may have led to the unfortunate incident and a probe has been ordered. The deceased has been identified as Amar Kumar (25), a resident of Samastipur district. Amar Kumar’s family claimed that his death was due to negligence on the part of railway employees.
Shunting of Lucknow-Bharauni Express
According to eyewitnesses, the Lucknow-Bharauni Express was undergoing shunting at platform number 5 when the incident took place. Kumar died after becoming trapped between the engine and the buffer of a passenger bus. After a video of people trapped between buffer zones went viral on social media, family members of the deceased reached the spot and said they would not allow authorities to conduct a post-mortem before taking action against the culpable railway employees.
Order high-level investigation
The matter calmed down after Sonpur Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Vivek Bhushan Sood rushed to the spot and consoled the angry family members of East Central Railway Saraswati Chandra. Chandra said this was a very unfortunate incident and a matter of concern. The prescribed guidelines may have been violated during such exercises. Chandra said a high-level inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the incident and strict action will be taken against the guilty railway employees after the investigation is completed.
