German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz has received a notice from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) alleging the company has violated environmental pollution regulations, NDTV reported.

According to the report, Jagannath Salunk, regional officer of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, said: “The sub-bureau officials of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board have inspected the Chakan plant of Mercedes-Benz. It was found that the plant violated several pollution regulations. Therefore, a notice has been issued to the company, asking it to respond within 15 days.”

The report revealed that last month, the Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board chairman Siddesh Kadam and other officials conducted a surprise inspection at the Mercedes plant in Chakan near Pune, after which the board issued the above notice.

The notification cited non-functioning of clarifier and centrifuge units at the sewage treatment plant and non-compliance of the company with the requirement to install emission control devices for diesel engines as reasons for the Pollution Control Board’s review.

“The company has not complied with pollution control regulations. The clarifier and centrifuge units at the sewage treatment plant are not functioning properly. The company has also not complied with the requirement to install emission control devices for diesel engines. The sewage treatment plant is poorly operated and maintained,” the notice said.

The news portal, after reviewing the notice issued on Friday, September 20, reported that the board has asked the company to respond within 15 days of the issuance of the notice.

Mercedes-Benz India’s response

Mercedes-Benz India confirmed that it had received a notice from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and said: “We will study and respond to the issues in the notice. Our role is to work with government agencies.”

The company’s Chakan plant in Pune was established in 2009 and is spread over 100 acres, the report said.
