Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has opened up about the deep personal experience of miscarriage in 2020, during the recent episode of its podcast Arctapes: Confession of a Female Founder.
Talking with Reshma Saujani, the founder of Meghan’s code and the girls of CEO, Meghan reflected on the emotional toll of continuing “performance” professionally, competing with personal grief, People Informed
Meghan, 43, said, “I have talked about the abortion we had experienced.” “In some parallel way, when you have to learn to separate from what you have so much promise and hope … and let go to recover at a certain point, do something that you plan to love for a long time.”
His words were in response to Saujani, who shared his struggle with serial abortion while running his non-profit organization. Saujani described Meghan’s reflections as “really practical”, saying that the Duchess was “reading my diary.”
Meghan first revealed her abortion in an individual essay published by The New York Times in November 2020. She recalled the moment when she felt a sharp cramps holding her first birth, Archie, and knew that she was losing her second child.
“Losing a child means that almost unbearable grief was experienced by many, but talked about something,” he wrote at that time.
Now Rajkumar Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, Meghan talked about the happiness of motherhood on the podcast, saying, “I love a mother very much. It’s my favorite thing.”
He also shared how challenging it can be to take a break from parenting, often found himself scrolling through his children’s photos. “This is the parenting paradigm … so complete, and I will not do it for anything,” he said.
The conversation also touched the pressure to balance the professional ambition with traditional motherhood, both women said that should not be mutually exclusive.
