The United States has imposed sanctions on nearly 300 companies and individuals, including more than 19 Indian companies, which it claims provide products to the Russian military.

The U.S. Treasury and State departments made the announcement, labeling the entities “third country sponsors.” However, there has been no independent verification of the involvement of these Indian companies in enhancing Russian military capabilities.

US imposes ban on 19 Indian companies

There are 19 Indian companies on the global sanctions list, targeting more than 400 companies, many of which are mainly engaged in trading activities, buying Western equipment, including electronics, and then selling it to Russian companies hit by the sanctions.

For example, Danavas Services, a company that mainly provides digital kiosks for various services, lists Russian citizens as directors and shareholders. It is legal for Indian companies to hire foreigners for such positions, and there are no restrictions preventing them from working with Russian entities.

However, the company has been criticized by the United States for its use of advanced conventional weapons by Russia. Purported to be the source of manufacturing microelectronics. RRG Engineering is the only company on the sanctions list with limited involvement in the Indian defense sector.

Accused of shipping weapons to Russia

The company has partnered with the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to provide non-critical products for certain services. RRG is accused of sending more than 100 shipments of microelectronics to Artex Ltd, a Russian company designated by the United States.

Records show that RRG had earlier provided manpower to DRDO laboratories for projects related to data center and IT network setup.

In addition, it supplies a limited number of nuclear, biological and chemical warfare detectors to various military branches and is reportedly involved in satellite communications stations. Industry insiders say such equipment is readily available in India and can be easily procured if required.
