The election of the ward committee and one standing committee member from each zone of the Delhi Municipal Corporation scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed. MCD Mayor Dr. Shelly Oberoi refused to appoint a presiding officer, saying that her conscience does not allow her to participate in the undemocratic election process.

The Mayor said that several memorandums have been received from councillors who were unable to file nominations due to just one day’s notice and it is necessary to provide adequate time for nominations to maintain the fairness of the democratic process.

The Mayor’s Argument

The mayor said, ‘After my instructions, it took five days for the municipal secretary to issue the election notification, so how can only one day be given for filing nominations.’

He said that never before in the history of MCD has such a short time been given for filing nominations. Mayor Oberoi has directed the commissioner to restart the election process by giving at least one week’s notice for filing nominations.

The election was to be held on Wednesday

In case the mayor does not appoint a presiding officer, even if the election does not take place now, there is bound to be an uproar over it. The councillors can protest strongly on this issue at the time of the election. Let us tell you that the election of 12 ward committees was to be held on Wednesday, September 4, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, for which the corporation administration had issued guidelines.

Because BJP is not in majority in these two zones. Despite this, the party has fielded candidates. On the other hand, despite Aam Aadmi Party having majority in 5 zones, it has fielded candidates in 11 zones, which has increased the trouble of BJP.
