Matangi, the first autonomous surface vessel built in the country, set a new record on Friday. The ship traveled 600 kilometers without a driver. The ship, built by Sagar Defense, has to cover the distance from Mumbai to Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. On the first leg, the ship completed a 600-kilometer journey in autonomous mode. The peculiarity of this boat is that it can be used with or without a driver.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had issued a warning to the Navy’s Sagarmala Parikrama during the Swavalamban 2024 program in Delhi. The ship, which has no crew, is also included in the plan. Its addition to the Navy will provide new strength. This is a major achievement in the self-reliance efforts of the defense sector of the Indian government.

Journey from Mumbai to Tuticorin
The boat, built by Sagar Defense, will complete the 1,500-km journey from Mumbai to Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu without any crew as part of the Sagarmala Parikrama. Matangi is equipped with in-house developed navigation and collision avoidance software. In the first phase, Matangi has covered 600 kilometers from Mumbai to Karwar in autonomous driving mode and has 1,000 kilometers to go from Tuticorin.
