Manu Bhaker on Friday qualified for the final of the shooting 25m women’s pistol event, moving towards an unprecedented third medal for India at the Paris Olympic Games, but Isha Singh bowed out of the competition.

Manu scored a total of 590 points with 294 points in precision and 296 points in rapid and entered the finals by securing second place in the qualification.

Manu scored 97, 98 and 99 points respectively in three series of 10-10 marks in the precision round. In the rapid round, he scored 100, 98 and 98 marks in three series.

Major Veronika of Hungary topped the qualification with 592 points, equaling the Olympic qualification record.

Isha stood 18th with 291 points in precision and 290 points in rapid, scoring a total of 581 points and could not make it to the final among eight shooters. After scoring 95 and 96 points in the first two series of precision, she made a strong comeback with 100 points, but could only score 97, 96 and 97 points in the rapid round.

The final of this event will be played on Saturday, August 3. After the precision round of qualification, Manu and Isha were at third and 10th position respectively.

Veronica and Camille Jedrzejewski of France, who were in the top two positions in the precision round, also scored 294 points like Manu, but both of them captured the first two positions by hitting more at ‘X’ (center of the target). Manu hit ‘X’ seven times, while Veronica and Camille did so 15 and 13 times respectively.

After winning the bronze medal in individual 10 meter air pistol, Manu Bhakar along with Sarabjot Singh also won the bronze medal in the mixed team category. She became the first Indian to win two medals in the same Olympics.

On July 30, he along with Sarabjot Singh created history by defeating South Korea in the 10 meter air pistol mixed team category at the Paris Olympics. British-born Indian player Norman Pritchard won silver medals in 200 meter sprint and 200 meter hurdles in the 1900 Olympics, but that achievement was achieved before independence.

The Indian pair defeated Lee Wonho and Oh Ye Jin of Korea 16-10 and gave the country its second medal in this Olympics. Earlier, Manu had won bronze in the women’s 10 meter air pistol event.

3 medals have come in shooting
If seen, for the first time an Indian shooter has won a medal in the 50 meter rifle three positions event of the Olympics. This was India’s third medal in the current Olympic Games. Before this, India’s last two medals also came in shooting. That means, for the first time, India won three medals in shooting in an Olympic season.
