Manipur violence: Supreme Court probe into whistleblower tapes against CM Biren Singh

Supreme Court.

CM N Biren Singh’s problems in Manipur violence cases are likely to increase. The Supreme Court will investigate the whistleblowing tapes against him. The court has agreed to investigate audio recordings purportedly showing the role of CM Biren Singh in the violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. A bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra had sought details from the petitioner about the source and material of the tape to prove its authenticity.

This petition was submitted by JX Human Rights Trust. Upon hearing this, the court said it would give the applicant the opportunity to submit materials proving the authenticity of the tape. In response, the petitioner’s counsel said the clip would be submitted. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioner, said the whistleblower recorded the conversation of CM Biren Singh.

Biren Singh promotes extremism

The petitioner’s counsel said that during the conversation he (Biren Singh) admitted that he promoted extremism. Not only that, he also protects those who snatch weapons. Prashant Bhushan asked why the chief minister allowed looting of arms and ammunition. How does the state investigate this matter?

this is not a simple thing

The petitioner’s counsel said the matter has been referred to the Lamba Committee. The court is hearing the Manipur case. This incident is no ordinary thing. Meanwhile, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the central government, opposed the petition. He said the petitioners’ intention was to keep the fire burning.

The petitioner should go to the High Court

He said the matter was under investigation. CM Biren Singh held talks with all Kuki MLAs to restore peace in the state. The whistleblower does not want peace to be established in the state. The petitioner should approach the High Court. After the case was heard, he challenged the court’s decision.
