West Bengal is at the center of discussion these days. The reason for this is the incident of rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. There is anger against this brutality in the entire country, people are on the streets. Questions are also being raised on Mamata Banerjee’s government. CM Mamata seems to be surrounded by this uproar that has been going on for 11 days and the entire incident. The investigation of the case is in the hands of CBI. There are still many unresolved questions related to this case, but this incident has refreshed the memories of another incident 31 years old. This story is special and relevant because this incident was also of rape. Mamta Banerjee was in its role too and even then questions were raised on the government.

When a disabled girl was raped in 1993…

It is the early days of the year 1993. At that time there was Jyoti Basu’s government in the state and the Left had dominance. At that time, an incident of rape of a disabled person had taken place in Nadia district. Jyoti Basu government was under attack. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee had reached Writers Building (Secretariat of West Bengal Government) with the victim. She sat on a dharna in front of the door of the then Chief Minister Jyoti Basu’s chamber to meet him. Mamta alleged that the culprits were not being arrested because of political connections. But Basu did not meet him.

Dragged down the stairs, clothes torn

When it was time for Basu to arrive, when Mamta did not agree to move away from there despite a lot of coaxing, the female policemen dragged her and the victim down the stairs and took them to the police headquarters in Lalbazar. During this time even Mamta’s clothes were torn.

Then Mamta swore…

It is said that after this incident, Mamta had sworn that now she will step into this building again only after becoming the Chief Minister. Finally, on May 20, 2011, after almost 18 years, he again stepped into this historic red building as the Chief Minister.

The roots of leftism were shaken in 18 years

In these 18 years, Mamta conducted so many dharnas against the Left government which shook the foundation of the Left government. Ultimately Mamta came to power in the state. It is said that former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu was so irritated with Mamata’s politics that he never even took her name in public. Instead he always addressed Mamata as ‘that woman’.

‘Questions’ on rape case and Mamta

Although Mamta’s political career contains many stories, every layer of which is both interesting and full of struggle. But questions have been raised many times on Mamata’s role in rape cases in the state. Mamta is constantly in the news over the incident of rape-murder of a doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. However, this is not the first case when questions have been raised on Mamata in such matters.

How can the Hanskhali case be forgotten, when Mamata had dismissed the rape incident as an affair? Similarly, in an incident that took place in Kamudni, he described the people who were protesting as CPI(M) supporters. ‘Rape’ tops Mamata Banerjee’s diary of mistakes. Especially if someone from his party is guilty. During her years in power, Mamata Banerjee has declared many rape cases false year after year. She herself becomes a victim when as a woman leader she is asked to answer on rape cases. If questions are asked by the opposition, they make counter allegations.
