The questions raised by the Supreme Court while taking suo motu cognizance of the Kolkata rape and murder case, every comment of the court is trying to know the stand of Mamata Banerjee, but it does not seem that Mamata Banerjee has anything left to react. It is a different matter for the state government to file a formal reply to the court’s notice.
Be it the Saradha sting case or the Narada scam, Mamata Banerjee has always been seen at the forefront. She has been defending her leaders at every possible opportunity. She wins elections on her own and also makes her ministers – but the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College has spoiled the whole ‘game’ of Mamata Banerjee’s politics.
Mamata Banerjee’s politics has been spotless, certainly her fellow leader and nephew Abhishek Banerjee is also surrounded by corruption allegations, yet she has never been affected, but this time her government has automatically come under the scanner.
The question of the Supreme Court is, ‘When the conduct of the Principal of RG Kar Hospital was under investigation, then how was he immediately appointed to another college? The question is serious. And the answer will also have to be given by Mamata Banerjee, because she is the head of the government.
Just as she has been giving a clean chit to her leaders till now, similarly a chit will have to be given in the case of Medical College Principal Sandeep Ghosh too – and this time Mamata Banerjee is also on strike for her Police Commissioner like last time. Can’t sit, all such opportunities have gone out of Mamata Banerjee’s hands.
The biggest matter of concern for Mamata Banerjee is that the Supreme Court has had to give the trust that the doctors should have received from her side – and this is proof that the doctors have lost confidence in Mamata Banerjee. At least this seems to be the case in the Kolkata rape-murder case.

During the hearing of the Kolkata rape-murder case, the Supreme Court said, this is not only a horrific incident but also highlights the shortcomings in the security of doctors across India. And that is why the Supreme Court has said, we want to form a national task force, in which doctors will also participate.
Regarding the doctors’ strike, the Supreme Court said that they should understand that the health care system of the entire country is with them.
The Supreme Court reassured the agitating doctors and advised them to trust the court, and said, ‘You return to work… we will now take care of your safety.’
Mamata Banerjee could also have given this confidence to the doctors, just as the people of West Bengal have been trusting Mamata Banerjee’s words during the elections. The results of West Bengal Assembly elections of 2016, 2021 and Lok Sabha elections of 2024 are proof of the trust of the people of Bengal on Mamata Banerjee.
The Supreme Court has made another important comment, ‘If women will not be able to go to work… and will not be safe at the workplace, then by doing so we are depriving them of the right to equality.’
This is the biggest question on the West Bengal government, where there is a woman Chief Minister – and Mamata Banerjee will have to clarify the situation on this matter.
If Mamata Banerjee had handled this case intelligently and sensitively, such questions would not have arisen regarding the safety of women in West Bengal. Not many days have passed since the Sandeshkhali incident. Politics has its place, but women’s safety is above politics.
Mamta Banerjee has made mistakes at every step.
It cannot be said that Mamata Banerjee was averse to the CBI investigation of the Kolkata rape-murder case, because while setting a deadline for the police, the Chief Minister had given a public statement that she would hand over the case to the CBI. However, Calcutta High Court has already done this work.
The Supreme Court has observed, ‘It appears… the crime was discovered in the early hours itself… the principal of the medical college tried to pass it off as suicide.’
Although this matter came to the Supreme Court later, TMC leader Sukhendu Shekhar Rai had already raised these questions. In his social media post, Sukhendu Shekhar Roy had demanded the CBI to interrogate RGK principal Sandeep Ghosh and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal in custody.
See the irony where Kolkata Police summoned Sukhendu Shekhar to the police headquarters for paying attention to his words. After all, why did Mamata Banerjee think that the suicide theory of the principal and the police was correct? Does Mamata Banerjee have the power to find out the truth? There was no other mechanism for this, or all this was included in his political nature. This question definitely arises from this incident.
This question is also of the Supreme Court, ‘What was the principal doing? Why was he called for questioning so late? Why did he show such inaction?
And this also raised a question, the Supreme Court has asked, ‘When the conduct of the Principal of RG Kar Hospital was under investigation, then how was he immediately appointed to another college?’
The Supreme Court has also taken serious note of the fact that the principal tried to portray the incident as suicide, and the parents were not allowed to see the body.
Neither the party’s support, nor the India alliance
TMC leader Sukhendu Shekhar Rai has also written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the medical college incident, and has also had to go to the High Court fearing arrest against the police summons for the social media post.
Sukhendu Shekhar is not the only leader to express his opinion different from the official line of the party on the Kolkata rape-murder case. TMC leader Shantanu Sen had also raised questions after this incident, due to which he had to lose the post of spokesperson. Shantanu Sen said that complaints of irregularities were being received in that medical college for the last three years, and some people were not allowing the information about the irregularities in the health department to reach the Chief Minister.
The principal’s statement that the rape and murder incidents were suicides is only confirming what Shantanu Sen said. And the personal concern expressed by Shantanu Sen also shows the seriousness of the matter.
