There have been two major changes in the NCERT manual as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. From this year, a poem titled “National War Memorial” and a lesson titled “Veer Abdul Hameed” have been included in the NCERT textbook for Class 6.

The initiative, jointly launched by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education, aims to inculcate the values of patriotism, dedication, courage and sacrifice in school children and ensure the participation of young people in nation building. The poem National War Memorial appreciates the sentiments behind it.

About Veer Abdul Hamid

The chapter titled ‘Veer Abdul Hameed’ is dedicated to the memory of the heroic Company Quartermaster Havildar (CQMH) Abdul Hameed, who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation during the 1965 Indo-Pak war and was awarded the country’s highest gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra (awarded posthumously). Such records were created during Abdul Hameed’s time and are still talked about today.

It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National War Memorial for the nation at the famous Central Vista ‘C’ Hexagon at India Gate in New Delhi on February 25, 2019. The National War Memorial was established to inculcate high moral values, spirit of sacrifice, national ethos and sense of belonging in every citizen and pay due tribute to the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives in defence of the nation. As part of the action plan to make the National War Memorial (NWM) an iconic national monument, the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Ministry of Education/NCERT has included NWM and related references/materials in the curriculum. .

The name of the Harappan civilization has been changed

Apart from this, the new NCERT social science book for Class VI has also made many changes. The Harappan civilization will now be referred to as the ‘Sindhu-Saraswati’ and ‘Indus-Saraswati’ civilizations. The ‘Saraswati’ river will be mentioned in many places, and its drying up is also mentioned as one of the reasons for the decline of the Harappan civilization. Apart from this, the book also mentions that India once had its own ‘primary meridian’, called the ‘Ujjayini meridian’.
