Major administrative reshuffle before the announcement of election dates in Jammu and Kashmir, transfer of 200 officers

The Election Commission will announce the dates for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections today, even before this a large-scale administrative reshuffle has taken place in the state. The government has transferred about 200 civil and police officers in the state. IAS Abhishek Sharma, who was the Deputy Commissioner of Samba, has been transferred and appointed as the Deputy Commissioner of Rajouri.

Vikas Kundal, Managing Director, Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited, has been appointed Deputy Commissioner of Poonch with additional charge of the post of Managing Director, Jammu and Kashmir Power Corporation Limited.

Shri Shakeel UI Rehman Rather, Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora, has been transferred and posted as Director, Flowers and Horticulture Department, Kashmir. Majid Khalil Ahmed Drabu, who was posted as Controller of Legal Metrology, Jammu and Kashmir, has been made the Mission Director of ICPS, Jammu and Kashmir.

Assembly election dates are to be announced today

Let us tell you that a press conference of the Election Commission is to be held today at 3 pm in which the election schedule for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections will be announced. Assembly elections are being held for the first time after the removal of Article 370 in the state. Ever since the state reorganization and creation of a Union Territory in 2019, the political parties of Jammu and Kashmir have been demanding early assembly elections and restoration of full statehood. The Supreme Court had also directed the Election Commission to conduct the assembly elections of Jammu and Kashmir by September.

Elections on 90 seats

Due to non-completion of delimitation work, assembly elections could not be held in Jammu and Kashmir for a long time. After the delimitation of May 2022, the number of seats in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has now increased to 90. In this way, elections are to be held on 43 assembly seats in Jammu and 47 assembly seats in Kashmir. In 2014, elections were held on 87 assembly seats, including 37 seats in Jammu and 46 seats in Kashmir Valley, besides 6 seats in Ladakh.

Elections were last held in 2014

Before the state reorganization, elections for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly were last held in 2014. At that time, about 65 percent voting took place for 87 seats of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Talking about the election results, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got the maximum 23 percent votes but the party was second after the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with 25 seats. PDP then emerged as the largest party by winning 28 seats.
