Politics over the post of Maharashtra Police Chief has turned heated again. After the code of conduct was implemented, the Congress wrote to the Election Commission seeking the transfer of then police commissioner Rashmi Shukla. Thereafter, after Rashmi Shukla was handed over as per the instructions of the Election Commission, the Congress once again wrote to the Election Commission with important demands.

The Congress party has alleged that the conditional appointment of Sanjay Kumar Verma to the post of Director General of Police (DGP) by the Maharashtra government is a serious violation of constitutional provisions, Supreme Court directions and settled administrative principles. It is therefore difficult for the Inspector General of Police to work neutrally and impartially during elections.

Congress said the Election Commission should use its officers to take an early decision on Sanjay Verma’s interim appointment.
