PATNA: Two people have been arrested for purportedly pelting a train with stones and smashing the windows of the coaches at Madhubani railway station in Bihar, the RPF (Railway Police Force) officials said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Monday evening, when Swatantrata Senani Superfast Express, going from Jayanagar to New Delhi, faced vandalism at Madhubani railway station as devotees on their way to Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj to attend the Mahakumbh Mela, turned unruly.
Unable to board the overcrowded train, they resorted to breaking glass windows of air-conditioned coaches, after the gates were locked by the passengers on-board.
Video footage captured the chaotic scenes where people hurled stones at the train and smashed the window panes with sticks, making forceful entry into the coaches and causing distress to seated passengers, started making rounds on social platforms.
After getting information about the incident, the RPF team reached the spot and pacified the people.
The chaos continued even after the train 12561 departed from Madhubani, according to sources.
The train was targeted by the unruly people on its journey between Madhubani and Darbhanga, as they broke windows from coaches M1 to B5 and A1.
When the train reached Samastipur station, large number of people was seen climbing into the air-conditioned coaches through the broken windows.
Station house officer (SHO), GRP Samastipur, BP Alok told this newspaper that the RPF arrested two people and they are being questioned. “No law and order situation arose at Samastipur station. We have managed the crowd and the train left with passengers,” he said adding that people extensively vandalized the train at Madhubani station.
