“The Hobbit” star Luke Evans recently discussed the challenges openly gay actors face landing macho roles in Hollywood.
In an interview, he noted that not many gay actors get to play the kind of strong, masculine roles that have defined his career, such as in “Immortals,” “Fast & Furious 6” and “Dracula Untold.” role. “
Recalling Ian McKellen’s advice about his potential to become a “big meaty star”, Evans reflected on the progress that still needs to be made in terms of representation. He expressed frustration that despite the increasing visibility of gay actors, there are still few opportunities for them to play such roles.
Evans is currently filming a TV series called Crime, in which he plays a strong, outspoken character, and was asked if he knew of any other gay actors who could play similar roles. He responded negatively, stressing that while there are many gay actors, few play the type of characters he represents.
Evans’ comments highlight the ongoing discussion about the need for inclusivity and diversity in casting, particularly for LGBTQ+ performers playing traditionally male roles.
