Lin Yu-ting, Imane Khelif: Female or Male? Another case came to light amidst the uproar over transgender player in Olympics, boxer failed in gender test

Lin Yu-ting, Imane Khelif Gender tests: The case of Algerian transgender boxer Imane Khalif in the Paris Olympics (2024) was not over, now a case related to the gender of another player Lin Yu-ting has come to light. Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-Ting has to play another match on Friday, she has failed in the gender test. However, despite this she will play her match.

Two-time world champion Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan will participate in her second Olympics after Imane Khalifa. She will compete with Sitora Turdybekova of Uzbekistan in the 57 kg category.

Both Khalifa and Lynn failed the gender eligibility criteria at last year’s World Championships. 25-year-old Khalifa has male XY chromosomes. Whereas the identity of both these boxers is registered in the name of a woman in their passports. Lin, the top seed in the women’s 57 kg featherweight category, has received a first-round bye ahead of her clash with Turdybekova.

Lin Yu-Ting’s career has been like this
Talking about Lynn, she had qualified for Paris Olympics after winning in the Asian Games last year. Lynn won her first world title in 2018 and became Youth World Champion in 2013.

Debate broke out on Iman Khalifa’s competition
Keep in mind that Algerian Khalifa sparked debate all over the world after his competition in the Olympics. Khalifa’s opponent, Angela Carini of Italy, left the match after 46 seconds on Thursday (August 1) and said that she had never faced such powerful punches in her life. Iman Khalifa, who is transgender, could not meet the gender eligibility criteria at the 2023 World Championship and was out. But this time there is an issue of gender-equality in Paris Olympics, that is why she got entry.

Khalifa and Lin are two-time Olympians
Khalifa and Lin are two-time Olympians who participated in the Tokyo Games. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) repeatedly defended the boxer’s right to compete this week. This year, for the first time, gender equality has come in Olympic boxing, in which 124 men and 124 women took part in Paris. IOC spokesman Mark Adams said on Tuesday, ‘All participants competing in the women’s category are following the competition eligibility rules.’ Their passports say ‘female’.

Based on Rio rules, boxers included…
The IOC said it decided on the boxers’ eligibility based on the gender-related rules that were in place at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Several sports have updated their gender-related rules in the past three years, including World Aquatics, World Athletics and the International Cycling Union.

The IOC is in charge of boxing in Paris, as it has revoked the Olympic status of the IBA (International Boxing Association) after years of administrative problems, lack of financial transparency and several cases of corruption involving judges and referees.

IBA is controlled by Chairman Umar Kremlev, who is Russian. He made Russian state-owned Gazprom its main sponsor and transferred most of the IBA’s operations to Russia. Last year, the IBA had disqualified both Ting and Khalif.
