LG smart TVs have reportedly started showing ads to users on the screensaver screen. LG Ad Solutions, the company’s subsidiary focused on brand campaigns, announced the move earlier this month and the ads appear to have appeared on the company’s smart TVs. Notably, the company emphasized that displaying screensaver ads will make better use of idle screens and engage users. The consumer technology company also said that showing these ads can increase brand awareness and awareness among customers.

Earlier this month, LG Advertising Solutions announced the launch of native screensaver advertising, a full-screen advertising experience activated on the home screen of LG Smart TVs. The company added that this “ad format capitalizes on idle screen time, turning a period of time that might be viewed as downtime into a valuable engagement opportunity.”

According to a report by Flatpanelshd, users can now see these ads on smart TVs, including the high-end G4 OLED TV. The ads are said to be displayed in a carousel format or full screen. The ad content is said to have nothing to do with the TV experience and is primarily brand-centric. These screensaver ads reportedly appear before regular screensavers and are localized in the language of the region where the smart TV is located.

LG Advertising Solutions highlighted in its press release that similar ads will also be hosted on LG Channels, the company’s free and ad-supported streaming service, and the Content Store. Highlighting the decision to launch the ads, Dave Rudnick, CTO of LG Advertising Solutions, said: “93% of viewers are now watching TV, texting, shopping, browsing social media or on their mobile phones Multitasking while playing games and phone calls. Through testing, we verified that screensaver ads offer a valuable opportunity for brands to be front and center on the largest screen in the room.”

It’s worth noting that many streaming platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ Hotstar, either have ad-supported tiers or display ads between shows. Technically, users do not own the content on these platforms and pay for the service, which is how these companies justify ad-based revenue. However, LG’s decision to display ads on screensaver screens is unique in the consumer tech world because users must still watch the ads despite paying upfront for a smart TV.
